It recalls the author's second year in college, when on a whim he drops out and signs up to guard salmon eggs in the middle of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho. Fromm, a native of Milwaukee, has minimal wilderness experience but has caught the "mountain man" fever from his roommate. After a year of reading authors like Liver-Eating Johnson, Jedediah Smith, John Colter and A.B.Guthrie, he has visions of living off the land and telling stories of hungry grizzlies, deep snow and close calls. With only two weeks to prepare, his roommate helps him buy supplies for seven months of winter living in a canvas tent. With quiet, beautiful descriptions of the landscape and comical looks at his inadequacies, Fromm lets us see what happens when a romantic vision collides with reality. A coming of age story that is earthy and grounded, INDIAN CREEK CHRONICLES is a great read that is over too soon. Perfect to read when the winter seems too long (you will enjoy the later part, when Fromm describes the slow approach of spring) or when it seems like winter will never come again, I guaratee you will want to read this every year.
